Canadian and Taiwanese hydrogen and fuel cell sectors announce MOU to strengthen collaboration

VANCOUVER and TAIPEI – The Canadian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (CHFCA) and the Taiwan Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Partnership are pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote collaboration between Canada and Taiwan in the research and development of zero-emission hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.
Facilitated by the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei, the MOU highlights various areas for collaboration between the Canadian and Taiwanese sectors namely in the development of hydrogen and fuel cell technology applications, and standards research.
“We are pleased to further strengthen our long-term relationship with the Taiwan Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Partnership through the signing of this MOU,” says Mark Kirby, President and CEO of the CHFCA. “Collaboration between our member companies and institutions will help Canada and Taiwan meet their shared commitment to net zero 2050. In addition, the development of a global supply chain for fuel cell and hydrogen products will lead to many economic benefits for our member companies.”
“To reach net-zero emissions by 2050, hydrogen would be one of the most crucial projects in the near future,” says Dr. Tso Chunto, Vice President of the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research and the Convener of the Taiwan Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Partnership. “As for Taiwan, we have completed hydrogen and fuel cell technology supply chains, which international collaborations could be greatly promoted. Through the recent Canada-Taiwan Low Carbon Emission – HFC Forum, it could bring endless possibilities for more mutual collaborations. We believed that Taiwan’s hydrogen industry is well-prepared for the better future.”
Recognized internationally as a global leader and pioneer in hydrogen and fuel cell research, development and commercialization, Canada is home to a significant concentration of hydrogen and fuel cell expertise that represents all elements within the supply chain. In December 2020, the Government of Canada launched the Hydrogen Strategy for Canada to cement hydrogen as a key part of Canada’s path to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and make Canada supplier of choice to the world for clean hydrogen.
Taiwan has a complete hydrogen and fuel cell technology supply chain, and due to its cultivation in clean energy for many years, various application for hydrogen and fuel cell technology have been developed, such as energy-integrated hydrogen communities, reusing industrial residual hydrogen, electric vehicles, and hydrogen fuel cell disaster communication platforms to back up power at multiple locations. The country views hydrogen as a vital component of a long-lasting clean energy future, and considering its profound experience and development in hydrogen and fuel cell technologies technology, Taiwan has proven to be an ideal partner for international collaboration.
“Canada and Taiwan have a strong and growing trade and investment relationship, and Taiwan is already Canada’s sixth largest trading partner in Asia,” says Ed Jager, the Director of the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei. “Like Taiwan, the Government of Canada is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and a key element in the drive to achieve that goal is Hydrogen. Canada is one of Top 10 hydrogen producers in the world and has more than 100 established hydrogen and fuel cell technology companies. I am confident that under the leadership of the CHFCA and the THFCP, this MOU will lead to increased close collaboration and mutual success.”
