Over the past decade the processes producing naturally high accumulations of hydrogen (tens of % by gas volume, mM concentrations in groundwaters) have been discovered. The contributions of hydration reactions and radiolysis were discovered to account for hydrogen accumulation in the continents on par with the oceanic lithosphere but hitherto unanticipated (Sherwood Lollar et al., 20214). Current investigations map the distribution, transport and accumulation of hydrogen in the Precambrian crust that accounts for > 70% of the continental lithosphere and that can serve as a source of hydrogen accumulation in the overlying Paleozoic sedimentary basins.
